Student-Adaptive Pedagogy in Mathematics: SSD-UCD Partnership

Digital Promise is partnering with the University of Colorado at Denver for a 3-year continuation of work that was started through a recent National Science Foundation-funded project and now funded through a local school district. This initiative is designed to accomplish three interrelated purposes: (a) promote K-5 teachers’ professional development toward student-adaptive pedagogy in mathematics, (b) promote mathematical learning and teaching for struggling students, and (c) study the impact of both on student learning and outcomes. We’re engaging a group of K-5 math coaches and teachers and K-5 students from underserved populations in summer workshops and academic year follow-ups. Analysis for the project includes a quantitative study pertaining to students’ growth in mathematics and a qualitative study to determine teacher growth in pedagogy, as well as a constructivist teaching experiment to teach multiplicative and fractional reasoning to fifth-grade students.
