Unlocking the Potential of Technology Innovations: A Vision for Supporting Multilingual Learners
Part of Learning Sciences Research
A growing body of research documents the benefits of multilingualism, which is increasingly recognized and celebrated as an asset that can strengthen learners’ experiences across their life. In alignment with Digital Promise’s commitment to expanding opportunity for every learner, we recognize that understanding the strengths and needs of multilingual learners (MLLs) is essential for ensuring that all students have access to powerful learning experiences. As emerging technologies are leveraged to support teaching and learning, we also recognize the need and opportunity for research and development efforts to center MLLs and ensure digital tools and experiences are designed to effectively support their learning.
This report describes a landscape study we conducted to better understand how technology and digital media are currently leveraged to support young MLLs (3-8 years old). Study activities included a comprehensive research literature review and an exploratory resource landscape scan. Findings from these initial activities then informed interviews with lead educational technology (edtech) and digital media designers and researchers. Generated from insights across these activities, the report concludes with design and research recommendations for future opportunities and efforts aimed at designing edtech with and for MLLs.
